How To Prepare For A Smooth House Move

Smooth-House-Move
Moving houses can be one of the most stressful and all-consuming experiences in our lives. After uni, I moved houses 3 times and each time took a huge amount of effort. With each house move, I have learnt that planning ahead of time is crucial and a good excuse to declutter. Here are some of my top tips on how to prepare for a smooth house move.

1) Declutter
This is by far the most important step for moving houses. We all love to hoard and can't help but accumulate things over time. If you have a few months before moving, now is the time to rummage through all wardrobes, shoe cabinets, kitchen cupboards, living area storage etc and get rid of things you don't need or love.

2) Sell/Donate
Once you have decided what needs getting rid of, arrange to take it to the charity shop or ask them to collect. For more valuable items and bulky/heavy things like furniture, sell these on eBay/Shpock/Gumtree/Facebook. I always sold furniture like sofas/dining tables/beds when I moved as these things always seem to need replacing after a few years and it makes moving a lot easier.

3) Collect Storage Boxes
Collect cardboard boxes from local supermarkets or buy/hire storage boxes in advance so you can start packing things that you don't need until right after your house move. Pack away things like Winter coats and clothes if you are moving houses in the summer, and pack away DVDs/Books on your shelf.

4) Address Change
Make a list of all the things you'll need to change your address for. Banks, pensions, work, utility providers, driving license, supermarket online shop accounts etc. You'll also need to set up a post-office redirect service so you don't miss out on any important letters.

5) Removals Company
And lastly, compare and book a removals company. Movers compare removal quotes saving you up to 40% in 1 minute with their search tool.
